The Virginia Union University women's tennis team continued to demonstrate progress during the 2026 season as the Lady Panthers competed on the road against Elizabeth City State University on Tuesday, April 14.
Virginia Union showed determination across the lineup, highlighted by a competitive No. 1 singles matchup.
Madison Hill battled Kola Price in a tightly contested match, ultimately falling 6-1, 7-5 but showcasing grit against a strong opponent.
In other singles action,
Maya Mercer fell to Marley Runner, 6-1, 6-1, while
Marianna Brooks dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Kennedy Rollins.
Briana Velinor faced Reichel Freyta and competed hard in a 6-1, 6-0 match.
The Lady Panthers also battled in doubles competition. Hill teamed with Velinor but fell to ECSU's Price and Freyta, 6-2. The pairing of
Alana Simmons and Brooks took on Micah Williams and Rollins but came up short, 6-1.
Despite the results, Virginia Union continues to show steady improvement throughout the 2026 campaign.
"We competed with a lot of heart, especially in that No. 1 singles match," said VUU Head Tennis Coach Gabriel Kotto. "Our players are continuing to grow with each match, and you can really see the progress in their effort, confidence, and overall level of play. This season has been about development, and the team is taking positive steps forward."
The Lady Panthers will conclude the 2026 season on the road when they travel to Bowie, Md., to face Bowie State University on Tuesday, April 21 at 1 p.m. to wrap up conference play
