Welcome to the Virginia Union University Sports Medicine page. The purpose of this page is to provide necessary information to all inquiring parties. The VUU Sports Medicine Staff is responsible for the primary health care of all varsity student-athletes.

The main function of VUU Sports Medicine is to provide a safe environment for the all members of the Virginia Union University athletics program and their visitors. The Sports Medicine department does this by focusing on the following 5 domains:
  1. Injury Prevention
  2. Clinical Evaluation and Diagnosis
  3. Immediate and Emergency Care
  4. Treatment, Rehabilitation, and Reconditioning
  5. Organization and Administration

The Virginia Union University Sports Medicine Staff will evaluate & manage athletic injuries sustained by the student-athletes. INSURANCE
If your insurance requires that your son/daughter see their PCP for referral to a specialist, you may want to consider selecting a physician in Richmond as their Primary Care Physician for their College years. The Sports Medicine Department utilizes the physicians at Virginia Commonwealth University Sports Medicine Clinic and would appreciate you selecting a physician within this network if possible. We will be glad to assist you with the process.

The Virginia Union University Department of Athletics utilizes a secondary athletic insurance policy. Any intercollegiate student-athlete who sustains an athletic-related injury or illness will file with their parent's/guardian's health insurance as the "primary" insurance provider. The athletic department will be responsible for those expenses not covered by the primary insurer.
In the event that the student-athlete has no primary insurance, the athletic medical insurance will serve as the primary insurer. It should be noted that the Department of Athletics will only cover injuries sustained during Virginia Union University Intercollegiate Athletics supervised/authorized practices or games. Additionally, the secondary insurance will only be filed when the student-athlete reports the injury to one of the Virginia Union University certified athletic trainers in a reasonable amount of time. If the athlete seeks medical attention prior to being evaluated by the athletic trainer, the injury/illness will be regarded as non-athletic in nature and not the responsibility of the Virginia Union University Department of Athletics. Any medical appointments will be arranged for the student-athletes by the athletic training staff.
