Virginia Union University's
Summer Moroch pitched two complete games as the Panthers gained their first sweep of the season by defeating Lincoln University of Pennsylvania 13-9 and 5-3 on Sunday, April 16, in Lincoln University, Pa.
Moroch struck out six over seven innings in the first game, and then allowed no earned runs while striking out three in the second game.
VUU's
Darnae Jones went 5-for-5 and drove in four runs in the opener while
Arianna Burford drove in two runs with a double in the nightcap.
"In game one we did a good job with scoring in the early innings and cutting down on the strikeouts," said VUU Head Softball Coach
Dominique Mulero. "We had big timely hits from
Darnae Jones who went 5-5 at the plate,
Arianna Burford and
Diamond Jones. We cut down on our errors and our defense played solidly the whole game.Â
Diamond Jones and
Kamryn Walker came up big in the outfield with catches.
Â
"In Game two we started off slow but held them to only 2 runs. In the 6th inning our bats came alive, and we had clutch hits from
Lianna Gonzalez,
Arianna Burford, and
Kallie Garland.
Summer Moroch pitched both games giving up only 5 walks with big time strikeouts. She pitched exceptionally well and kept us in the game. I'm proud of this team and the fight they showed today, it was a big confidence boast for everyone. Now we'll prepare for Saturday!"
VUU travels to Petersburg, Va., to face Virginia State University at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 22.
