Softball Sweeps Lincoln in Double-Header

RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Union University swept the Lions of Lincoln University of Pennsylvania in a CIAA softball doubleheader on Friday, April 10, at the VUU Softball Field.

The Lady Panthers captured a tight 8-7 victory in the opener before closing the day with an 11-3 win in the second game.

In game one, Virginia Union overcame early defensive miscues and relied on timely hitting to secure the victory. Power at the plate played a major role for the Lady Panthers. Ty'Hiera Wooten delivered a two-run home run in the second inning to give VUU momentum, while Janiya Brown slammed a two-run home run in the fifth inning, helping extend the Panthers' lead in the back-and-forth contest.

Virginia Union's offense continued to surge in game two, as the Lady Panthers jumped out early and never looked back in the run-rule victory.

Jenna Nicolski blasted a two-run homer to spark the offense, and Madison Crace added a solo home run, as VUU's lineup produced consistent power throughout the contest.

"We came out and had a few errors in the first game," said VUU Head Softball Coach Dominique Mulero. "I thought they were definitely going to cost us, but the bats came through like they always do. We had quality pitching in both games, but in game two it was all gas from the time we started. I told the team that we can not let them get up on us and play our game from start to finish."

The doubleheader sweep keeps Virginia Union tied with Bowie State University and Bluefield State University for first place in the Northern Division of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).

Virginia Union will return to action on Saturday, April 11, when the Lady Panthers host Bowie State in another CIAA doubleheader at the VUU Softball Field in Richmond, Virginia.
