Box Score 4 Virginia Union University's softball team started the 2023 CIAA season by going 3-3 at the CIAA Softball Roundup, held on March 23-25 in Elizabeth City, N.C.
VUU went 0-2 on the first day of the roundup, being defeated by Winston-Salem State University 11-9 and then by Claflin University 17-0.
The Lady Panthers rebounded on the second day (March 24) by downing Livingstone College 16-2 but then being defeated by Fayetteville State University 11-9.
Virginia Union, however, swept the competition on Saturday, March 25, by beating Johnson C. Smith University 13-12 and then beating St. Augustine's University 13-3.
"I'm proud of this team and the way we came to compete every game," said VUU Head Softball Coach
Dominique Mulero. "Of course we could've done better, but finishing 3-3 is not a bad way to start conference play. We need to cut down on errors and having our pitchers throw more pitches then they need to. We also need to work on jumping on teams while they're down and keeping that momentum with us the whole game.
Summer Moroch gave us everything she had on the mound and pitched very well.
Alaysia Miller,
Arianna Burford,
Nevaeh Johnson,
Miralba Sandez and
Diamond Jones came up big for us this week with the bats! We're going to go back evaluate what we need to work on this week and finish this season strong!"
Virginia Union now returns home to face Shaw University in a double-header beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 1, at the VUU Softball Field in Richmond, Va.
