Virginia Union University's Bruni Martinez has been named the CIAA Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week, the CIAA announced on Tuesday, February 7.

In last week's 93-90 win over non-conference opponent Washington Adventist, Bruni Martinez set career-highs of 20 rebounds and 16 blocks, while playing 45 minutes in the double-overtime contest. The freshman from Hato Mayor, Dominican Republic also recorded three blocks, a steal, and an assist while making 6-of-10 field goals in the game.

"Bruni truly amazes us with her rebounding ability and love for the game," said VUU Head Women's Basketball Coach Tierra Terry.  "Grabbing 20 rebounds in one game is impressive in any arena. She continues to work hard and show her ability and how good she will be in the future. We are proud of her"

Virginia Union travels to Lincoln University, Pa., to face the Lions of Lincoln University of Pennsylvania at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 9.
