Box Score 2 Virginia Union University's softball team gained a split in dramatic fashion over arch-rival Virginia State University on senior day at Panther Park in Richmond, Va., on Thursday, April 28.
The Lady Panthers entered the seventh inning tied with VSU 5-5, but VUU's
Brenda Reninga singled and then went to second on
Dominique Mulero's fly ball to right field.
Reninga advanced to third when Virginia State's shortstop misplayed
Arianna Burford's grounder.
The game was decided when
Mya Tino hit slow roller. By the time VSU's third baseman fielded the ball, Tino was safe at first and Reninga had crossed the plate giving Virginia Union a stunning 6-5 win.
"This game showed the heart, grit and determination of the Lady Panthers," Assistant Coach
Domonic Tino said. "They were down twice and they came back both times. That shows that we have heart, hustle and that they're all about playing this game."
Mulero picked up the win in the first game, scattering five hits over seven innings.
In the second game, VSU came away with a 6-4 win despite starting pitcher
Ericka Tiscareno driving in two runs.
The split gives VUU a final regular-season record of 14-10 overall and 9-7 in the CIAA.
Virginia Union will now wait until Sunday, May 1, to find out who the Lady Panthers will face in the first round of the CIAA Tournament, scheduled to begin on Tuesday, May 3.
