December 5th, 2022, during the 2022 Golf Coaches of America Association (GCAA) National Convention, Virginia Union University's Head Coach 
E. Lee Coble was presented with the 2022 HBCU National Academic Award. The criteria for this award you must have a Grade Point Average (GPA) 3.50 or higher to be eligible for any of the academic awards. The golf team also received the Golf Coaches of America Association All-Academic Team President's Special Recognition for 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22 for maintaining a GPA 3.50 or higher. As well as the HBCU Academic National Champions the last three seasons 2019-20, 2020-21, and 2021-22 (back-to-back-to back).
During Coach Coble's acceptance speech, he made the following remarks, "We have a motto at Virginia Union University, 'students first, athletes second.' The VUU Men's Golf team continued to work hard to live out that motto. The team maintained its high academic achievement, like all our fellow award recipients here tonight, despite the unprecedented period that began in March of 2020.
