Box Score Virginia Union University's women's basketball team used a 17-point explosion in the fourth quarter to pull away from Fayetteville State University 63-53 on Saturday, January 12, in Fayetteville, N.C.
VUU freshman
Christina Deng came off the bench to lead the Lady Panthers with 14 points while
Jasmine Carter led the team on the boards with six rebounds.
"I was proud of our defense to hold Fayetteville to only 53 points on their home court," said VUU Head Coach
AnnMarie Gilbert. "They are a team who had been playing well. The combined play of
Christina Deng and
Ifunanya Okoye was critical (Deng and Okoye combined for 24 points and four rebounds.)."
Deng went six-for-six from the field while Okoye scored 10 points in the win.
VUU's
Rejoice Spivey added 13 points while teammate
Shareka McNeill scored 11 points.
"Rejoice really stepped up her offensive attack with 13 points and three assists," said Gilbert. "The Broncos did a good job of limiting the touches of Shareka, holding her to just 11 points while
Shameka McNeill hit two big threes off the bench to help distance us from Fayetteville. It was an ugly road win, but we finished the game strong."
The win raised VUU to 13-1 overall and 4-1 in CIAA play. Fayetteville State fell to 8-5 overall and 3-2 in the CIAA.
Virginia Union now travels to Raleigh, N.C., to meet Saint Augustine's University at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, January 14.
