Virginia Union University's
Jareece Sayles came within one hit of a perfect game as VUU defeated Elizabeth City State University 16-0 in the first game of a double-header on Saturday, April 8, in Elizabeth City, N.C.
Sayles struck out 10 and walked none in the win, marking the most strikeouts by a Lady Panther pitcher since Quincy Lewis struck out 13 batters against Lincoln (Pa.) University on April 11, 2012.
VUU'sÂ
Ro'Shaila Williams drove in four runs on four hits in the win.  Virginia Union's Janaya Harris drove in two runs on a pair of doubles.
In the first game, Virginia Union's
Shontel Linnette struck out nine batters while slugging a home run.  In all, Linnette drove in two runs on three hits as VUU swept the Vikings 16-1.
VUU'sÂ
Karrina Gooding had four hits, including two doubles, in the win.
The sweep raised Virginia Union's record to 6-11 overall and 5-5 in the CIAA. Â Elizabeth City State fell to 1-20 overall and 0-7 in CIAA play.
Virginia Union now returns home to face Chowan University in a double-header at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 9, at the VUU Softball Field in Richmond, Va.
