Lady Panthers Down VSU for 20th Win

Box Score Before a sell-out crowd of 2,500 fans, Virginia Union University's women's basketball team defeated CIAA arch-rival Virginia State University 60-51 in The Battle of I-95 on Saturday, February 4, in Historic Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.

"I told the girls before the game that this was my vision for Virginia Union women's basketball, to have a packed house game in and game out," said VUU Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert.  "The girls really deserve it because they worked really hard to get the job done, and they've done it 20 times in 21 tries."

Virginia Union's Brittany Jackson led the Lady Panthers with 22 points while teammate VUU's Alexis Johnson had 14 points in the win.

The win was not only the 20th win of the season for the Lady Panthers, but also the 200th career win for AnnMarie Gilbert.  The Lady Panthers are now 20-1 overall and 11-1 in the CIAA.  Virginia Union is in first place of the Northern Division of the CIAA.

"We had a couple of kids who were under the weather, but you've got to be able to play in big games, and Virginia State is a very big game," said Gilbert.  "Virginia State always makes some big shots when they play here, so I'm glad we were able to weather the storm."

Virginia Union's Lady Walker and Jackson had eight rebounds apiece in the win.

Virginia State fell to 15-7 overall and 6-5 in the CIAA.

Virginia Union now hosts Bowie State University at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 8, in Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
