Lady Panthers Surge to 10-0!

Box Score Virginia Union University's Alexis Johnson recorded a double-double with a team-high 15 points and 10 rebounds as the Lady Panthers surged past Winston-Salem State University 68-48 on Monday, January 2, in Historic Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.

The win kept the Lady Panthers undefeated at 10-0 while also giving VUU a 1-0 CIAA record.

"I'm really ecstatic about the way our team played," said VUU Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert.  "We were a little rusty coming off of Christmas break.  It was a nine-day break with just 5 to 6 days of practice, but I'm really pleased at how it all came together."

VUU's Lady Walker also recorded a double with 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds while Jayda Luckie added 13 points of her own.

"Alexis Johnson was amazing," said Gilbert.  "Lady Walker was solid on the glass and newcomer Rachael Pecota hit three of four threes out there.  I was just really thrilled with how Ashley Smith had some strong attacks.  I was really pleased at our effort."

VUU is off to the best start in 19 years with a 10-0 start.  It was also the 19th straight home win for the Lady Panthers.  The school record is 25 straight home wins, set between 1981 and 1983.

Winston-Salem State fell to 5-8 overall and 1-2 in CIAA play.

Virginia Union now travels to Raleigh, N.C., to face Shaw University at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 5.
