Virginia Union University's Lynda Kaneza and Destiny Chapman won their doubles match in a forfeit while Zsakee Crocker also won a forfeited match, but those were the only two wins the Lady Panthers were able to get as Shaw University defeated VUU in the opening round of the CIAA Tennis Championships, held on Thursday, April 28, in Raleigh, N.C.

Against VUU (4-14, 4-10 CIAA), Shaw cruised to a doubles point win, starting with a 8-3 win by CIAA Player of the Year, Ana Ruzir (Zagreb, Croatia) and All-CIAA Teodora Jovanovic (Nis, Serbia) at No. 1 doubles. All-CIAA Marilyne Kamegne (Yaounde, Cameroon) and Andrijana Martic (Belgrade, Serbia) turned in an 8-0 victory at No. 2 doubles.

In singles play, the Lady Bears was the first on board with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles as Shaw grabbed wins at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively to take the match.
