Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (Dec. 3, 2016) – In a game that featured nine ties and eight lead changes, sixth-ranked Virginia Union University used a fourth quarter run to defeat Johnson C. Smith University, 78-72 in a nonconference women's basketball matchup in Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 59-56 entering the fourth quarter, JCSU grabbed the lead after going on a 6-0 spurt capped by an Asha Jordan layup with 7:34 remaining. VUU then regained the lead with 5:50 to go when
Ashley Smith nailed a jumper making it 65-64.
After a
Lady Walker basket made it 67-64, JCSU closed again to within one at 67-66 after Blaire Thomas got a layup to fall with 3:14 left.
Virginia Union then used a 7-2 run sparked by a
Brittany Jackson three-pointer , a
Lady Walker tip-in and a
Jayda Luckie layup that pushed the lead to 74-68 at the 1:05 mark. After a pair of Thomas free throws trimmed the lead to 74-70, VUU was able to salt the game away, going 6-of-6 from the line inside the final 24 seconds to take the 78-72 win.
Brittany Jackson led all scorers with 29 points while teammate
Alexis Johnson chipped in 14 points.
The Lady Panthers improved to 6-0 while Johnson C. Smith fell to 6-2.
Virginia Union now travels to Orangeburg, S.C., to face Claflin University at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, December 12.
