Taylor Hamilton slugged two home runs while
Shontel Linnette allowed just three hits as the Lady Panthers swept Bowie State University 8-7 and 5-1 in softball on Sunday, March 29, at the VUU Softball Field in Richmond, Va.
The wins came on the day when the Lady Panthers saluted the parents of the players.
In the opener, VUU exploded for six runs in the fourth inning on homers by
Shaquandra Brown and Hamilton to break open a 2-2 tie. Â The Lady Panthers hung on for the win behind the complete-game pitching of
Quincy Lewis, who struck out three over seven innings of work.
In the night-cap, Hamilton slammed a two-run homer in the first inning, her fourth home run in three games. Â Hamilton leads VUU with six homes this season.
The three first-innings run would prove to be all the Lady Panthers would need as Linnette shut down the Bowie State hitters, allowing just three hits and striking out five over seven innings.
Linnette is now 7-0 this season for the Lady Panthers. Â VUU's
Breana Miller also slammed her first home run of the season in the first game and Lewis is now 6-2 on the mound for VUU.
The wins raised VUU's record to 13-4 overall and 4-0 in the Northern Division of the CIAA, giving VUU sole possession of first place in the North. Â The Lady Panthers are 6-0 at home and 8-2 in CIAA play.
Virginia Union now travels to Petersburg, Va., to face Virginia State University at 12:00 noon on Saturday, April 11.
