Rahni Bell scored a career high 22 points, but Johnson C. Smith University handed the 20th-ranked Lady Panthers their first loss of the season 77-75 on Saturday, December 19, in Charlotte, N.C.
The game was decided on a controversial foul call with 0.6 seconds left. Â Johnson C. Smith's A'Diyah Ussery had launched a desperation shot 30 feet from the basket, but a foul was assessed to Bell. Â Ussery was given three free throws, and hit two after missing the first to give the Golden Bulls the win.
VUU's
Kiana Johnson scored 15 points for the Lady Panthers while
Taylor White added 13 points.
Virginia Union's
Lady Walker recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
The loss broke VUU's eight-game win streak at eight games. Â VUU is now 8-1 overall and 0-1 in CIAA play. Â Johnson C. Smith is now 8-4 and 2-0 in the CIAA.
The Lady Panthers now enter the Holiday break and will resume play when they meet Shaw University at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 7, in the Arthur Ashe Center in Richmond, Va.
