St. Aug's Ends VUU's Cinderella Run in CIAA Softball Tournament

Virginia Union University's softball team became the first Lady Panther team in school history to notch three wins in the CIAA Softball Tournament by downing Johnson C. Smith University 10-2 on Thursday, April 17, and then by upsetting Virginia State University 6-5 and Chowan University 4-2 on Friday, April 18, at the Petersburg Softball Complex in Petersburg, Va.

No Lady Panther team had ever won more than one tournament game in CIAA Tournament play.

It marked the first time in school history that Virginia Union had defeated Chowan, and was the first win over Virginia State since 1998.

In the first game of the day against VSU, VUU used a five-run seventh inning to wipe out a 4-1 deficit.

In the second game of the day, Shireese Borden had a double and scored two runs and VUU's Quincy Lewis struck out five over seven innings to down Chowan 4-2.

In the Lady Panthers' third game of the day, VUU's Shakia Mackey had two hits, but Saint Augustine's defeated the Lady Panthers 11-2.

The loss ended VUU's season and gave the Lady Panthers a final 14-15 record for 2014. The 14 wins were the third most in the softball program's history.
