Virginia Union University's
Danielle McEachern had three hits, pitched 4.1 innings and scored the winning run as the Lady Panthers downed Shaw University 15-14 in a marathon softball game on Monday, April 14, at the VUU Softball Field in Richmond, Va.
McEachern scored three times (including the winning run) en route to picking up the win. McEachern started the game, but was relieved by
Quincy Lewis in the third inning. After moving to first base, she re-entered the game as a pitcher for the final two innings.
In the opening game, VUU's
Quincy Lewis struck out eight batters, but the Lady Panthers fell short, losing the opener 10-8 despite home runs by
Shireese Borden and
Renesha Chiles.
Chiles would end the day with five hits, including four in the second game.
In the night-cap, the Lady Panthers fell behind 10-1 before mounting an eight-run second inning.
In the final inning, McEachern singled up the middle and
Shermanda Fambro drew a walk. A single through the right side of the diamond by
Kierris Doyle drove McEachern home with the winning run.
The win gave VUU a final regular-season record of 11-13 overall and 11-9 in the CIAA.
The Lady Panthers now travel to Petersburg, Va., to compete in the 2014 CIAA Softball Championships, to be held April 17-19 at Virginia State University.
