Lady Panthers Fall Just Short in Overtime Thriller at VSU

Box Score Virginia Union University's Ashle Freeman scored 27 points while teammat Melyse Brown added 23, but Virginia State University defeated VUU 84-79 in overtime on Saturday, February 8, in Petersburg, Va.

VUU led Virginia State 75-72 with three seconds left in regulation when the Lady Trojans drilled a 30-foot three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

VUU's Lady Walker had a career-high 12 rebounds in the game.

Freeman had five steals to push her career total to 240.  The VUU career record for steals is 256, set by Shirelle Reese, who played 1991-95.

Freeman also moved into seventh place among the all-time leading scorers at Virginia Union.  Freeman now has 1,182 points, moving past Katchona Johnson's 1,166.  Paris McWhirter, who scored 1,219 points, is next on the list.

The loss dropped VUU to 6-14 overall and 3-9 in the CIAA.  Virginia State, which is ranked 14th in the nation, moved to 19-1 overall and 10-1 in the CIAA.

Virginia Union now travels to Bowie, Md., to meet Bowie State University at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 12.
