Ashle Freeman Goes 14-for-14 from Line in 63-56 Win Over ECSU

Box Score Virginia Union University's Ashle Freeman went 14-for-14 from the free throw line and scored 34 points to power VUU to a 63-56 win over Elizabeth City State University on Tuesday, February 4, in Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.

Unfortunately, the NCAA requires a minimum for Division II records of 18 free throws to be listed in the record book.

"It feels good" said Freeman, "I can take the pressure but having my team doing there part, it takes a lot off of me. Its all a team effort so, (everyone) doing their part means we can all come together as a team, and I feel like that's how we've gotten a lot of our wins because we do so much better (as a team)."

VUU's Melyse Brown scored 12 points while ShaHadah Barrett dished off a season high 10 assists.

Head coach Barvenia Wooten-Cherry was asked about her excitement toward the newly emerging playmakers. "I feel very good that were making the upturn, but I still feel there are some things we need to work on. We want it to start coming on right now, this is the prime time for (our team) to peak going into the post season so you definitely want your team to be playing well and we're excited that we are."

The win raised VUU's record to 6-13 overall and 3-8 in the CIAA.  Elizabeth City State falls to 5-15 overall and 2-9 in the CIAA.

Virginia Union now travels to Petersburg, Va., to face 14th-ranked Virginia State University at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 8.
