Virginia Union University's Ashle Freeman scored her 1,000th career point by scoring 27 points, but Shaw University defeated the Lady Panthers 78-67 on Thursday, January 9, in Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.

Freeman scored her 1,000th point on a free throw with 36 seconds left in the game.  Freeman now has 1,000 career points and is the 13th player in VUU women's basketball history to score 1,000 points.

VUU's Melyse Brown added 16 points while Shahadah Barrett dished off 12 assists (the VUU school record for assists in a single game is 15, set by Nofortiria Grant against the University of the District of Columbia on January 9, 1999).

Brown also led VUU with nine rebounds.

The loss dropped VUU to 3-9 overall and 0-4 in the CIAA.  Shaw is now 9-5 overall and 3-1 in CIAA play.

Virginia Union now faces Fayetteville State University at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 11, in Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
