WBB: Bowie State 51, VUU 49

Box Score Four days after being named to the NCAA Division II 40th Anniversary Tribute Team, Coach Barvenia Wooten-Cherry, and the Lady Panther basketball team stormed the court to face off against the Bowie State Bulldogs of Bowie MarylandUniversity on Wednesday, January 22, in Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va..

As the Lady Panthers got off to a slow start, first half play can be accredited for Wednesday night's loss. The team shot a daunting 18% from the field, and just could not seem to find a rhythm.

"We got off to a slow start and had to dig ourselves out a hole. I always talk to my team about being prepared and expecting the unexpected. I think tonight we showed that resolve in the second half, but I don't think we've ever shot this low in the whole 16 games so far.

At the half the lady panthers were down by 11, looking to make a major comeback, and come back they did. Shooting lights out in the second half the lady panthers climbed too a slim lead but could not maintain it. Despite the final score, the Lady Panthers just barely came up short of a win, on the last possession, in the final seconds of the game.

There were only 2 players in the entire game to achieve double-doubles and both were wearing maroon and steel. The first being Melyse Brown snatching 11 rebounds and was the leading scorer of the game with 17 points. As a part of Browns performance she shot two 3 pointers and went 5-6 from the line.

Along with Brown was her freshman teammate Jasmin Dancy. Dancy has been playing far beyond her years as she is the only freshman in the starting line up. Dancy added 10 more rebounds to Browns 11 crediting the duo with 50% of the team's total rebounds for the night. In addition to that, Dancy added 12 points from the field. If Dancy can continue her success, look for her to be an All-American selection in the near future.
With the emergence of other shooters late in the season, the team helped to take eyes off of Ashle Freeman. With that being said, Freeman did not disappoint. Her 16 points came mostly in the clutch giving Virginia Union a fighting chance going into the final seconds of the competition.

With all of the double digit scoring numbers the Lady Panthers were able to obtain, credit must be given to Junior guard ShaHadah Barret. With 9 assist, Barret constantly seemed to find the open shooter.

The ladies are on the road for an away game Saturday (1/25/14) night against the Lincoln University Lions, before they return back home to Barco-Stevens Hall for another meeting with the Vikings of Elizabeth City State University.
