Virginia Union University's
Renesha Chiles slugged a three-run homer while teammate
Quincy Lewis pitched two complete games to lead VUU to a 9-8 and 7-4 sweep of Virginia State University on Sunday, April 7, in Petersburg, Va.
The sweep was the first for a Lady Panther softball team over VSU since 2002 and gave VUU 14 wins on the season, the most for a Lady Panther softball program in 25 years (the 1988 team won 19 games).
In the first game, VUU jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning when
Kierris Doyle slammed a three-run triple. Doyle had four RBIs in the game as Lewis scattered 14 hits over seven innings.
The eventual winning run came when VUU's Chiles singled in
Shakia Mackey with two outs in the sixth inning.
In the second game, Chiles gave the Lady Panthers a 3-0 lead on her homer in the fourth inning. VUU added three more runs when Shaquanda Brown doubled in two runs and then
Danielle McEachern scored on a wild pitch.
The wins raised VUU's record to 14-6 overall and 12-6 in CIAA play. VSU dropped to 14-15 overall and 11-3 in the CIAA.
Virginia Union now returns to face Elizabeth City State University in a single game at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10, at the VUU Softball Field in Richmond, Va.
