Ashle Freeman scored 18 points while
Melyse Brown added 12 points to lead the Lady Panthers to a 52-49 win over Winston-Salem State University on Thursday, January 3, in Historic Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
Brown hit a pair of free throws with three seconds left in the game to give VUU a 50-49 lead. Freeman added a pair of free throws with one second left to give the Lady Panthers the three-point win.
The game was the CIAA season-opener for both teams.
VUU's
Danielle Ferguson had 11 points and eight rebounds while ShaHadah Barret grabbed seven rebounds.
The win raises Virginia Union's record to 4-5 overall and 1-0 in the CIAA. Winston-Salem State fell to 5-6 overall and 0-1 in CIAA play.
The Lady Panthers return to action on Saturday, January 5, when they tip off against Livingstone College at 5:30 p.m. in Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
