Virginia Union University's softball team went 2-2 at the Virginia Wesleyan College Beach Blast Classic, held March 4 & 5 in Virginia Beach, Va. The Lady Panthers' 3-3 record is their best start since the 2000 team started with a 4-2 record.
In the opening game, VUU shut out York (NY) University 11-0 behind
Valeria Cantu's two-hitter. Cantu struck out six and walked only three through five innings of work.
VUU's
Kara Scott led the Lady Panther offense with four RBIs while
Shireese Borden stole two bases.
In the second game on March 4, Goldey-Beacom College stopped VUU 17-2 despite Borden's two hits.
On March 5, the Lady Panthers got back on the winning track by beating Gallaudet University 7-5. Cantu drove in three runs on two hits. VUU's
Renesha Chiles picked up the win.
In the finale, Averett University stopped a tired Lady Panther squad 22-0.
VUU's Borden is now 9-for-9 in stolen base attempts.
The Lady Panthers are now 3-3 and will face Elizabeth City State University in the CIAA Opener at 2:00 p.m. on March 9 at Parker Field in Richmond, Va.
