Va. Union falls to 6-14, 9-5 CIAA after losing Johnson C. Smith University 57-62 Thursday evening in Barco-Stevens Hall.
VUU had flashes of consistency on the offensive end. With less than a minute before the close of the half, the Lady Panthers were only down four (34-30). Guard Tiffany Clarke carried the bulk of the load for VA Union with eight points, shooting 100 percent from the field (3-3) and the free throw line (2-2).
Virginia Union came out punching in the second half. Guard Tonaye Smith worked the interior to create two possible three-point plays on consecutive possessions. Smith made the free throw on the second possession to give the Lady Panthers a 47-46 lead. However, the Lady Panthers did not have enough time or effort to make a comeback, eventually losing 62-57.
Smith was Virginia Union's top contributor with 17 points, 11 boards (10 defensive), and two assists.
The Lady Panthers will return back in action on Monday the 9th at the Siegel Center on VCU campus. Game time is 5:30pm against Virginia State University
