Catawba Outlasts Lady Panthers, 71-62

– Virginia Union was outlasted by non-conference opponent Catawba College, 71-62, in their first game of the 2008 Comfort Suites Classic in Salisbury, NC. The loss drops the Lady Panthers to 2-3 this season. 
                    
The Lady Panthers cleaned up on the boards, out-rebounding the Indians, 45-38. Yuvonna Stevens led VUU's rebounding efforts, pulling down a game-high 13 rebounds in the contest. Virginia Union continues to be anchored by Tonaye Smith who posted her third double-double of the season with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Dashia Chandler was the only other player to post double figures for the Lady Panthers adding 12 points. 
 
VUU got off to a solid start, outscoring the Indians 20-36 in the first half.  The Lady Panthers continued to lead late into the second half until a 3-pointer by CC's Nisha Long with 10:49 remaining in regulation gave the Indians a 44-42 advantage. The Indians led by as many as 11 points before eventually clinching the 9 point victory. 
 
Catawba was led by Maggie Sullivan, who finished with a team-high 14 points and 10 rebounds. 
 
The Lady Panthers will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, November 29th when they take on the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College. Tip-off is set for 2:00 PM. For additional information, please contact the VUU Office of Sports Information at tbsykes@vuu.edu
