Butler to be Inducted into Archbishop Carroll High School Hall of Fame

Jay Butler, the head coach of the Virginia Union University Men's Basketball Team, will be inducted into the Archbishop Carroll High School Hall of Fame on Saturday, April 13, in Washington, D.C.

Butler, a 1992 graduate of Archbishop Carroll, will be inducted along with Robert (Bobby) Carroll, Mike Sampson, Lyndra Little, Chuck Taylor, Eddie Trujillo, Kenny Yeager, and the 1978-79 Football Team.

Butler has a career head coaching record of 331-217 with a 60.4% winning percentage.

During his tenure at VUU he has coached two CIAA Players of the Year in Ray Anderson and Robbie Osborne, a Defensive Player of the Year in Will Jenkins and a Rookie of the Year in Demarius Pitts.

Butler guided Virginia Union to the CIAA Tournament Championship in 2018 and to three appearances in the NCAA Division II Basketball Tournament.  He also guided VUU to a NCAA Tournament Opening Round win in 2023.  

Butler was named the CIAA Coach of the Year in 2023;

A 1998 graduate of Virginia Union University with a degree in criminal justice, Butler played for legendary coach Dave Robbins, and was a key member of the Panther basketball program along with NBA Hall of Famer Ben Wallace. He helped Virginia Union capture three straight CIAA championships and make four NCAA Division II appearances. In 1996, Butler's senior season, he guided the team to the NCAA Division II Final Four. Butler finished his playing career at Virginia Union with a 107-14 won-loss record. Butler served as team captain from (1994-1996). 

A native of Washington, D.C., Jay began his college coaching career at the University of the District of Columbia where he was the all time winningest coach for the women's basketball program. He was inducted into the UDC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019.

In his 11 seasons as head coach at the University of the District of Columbia, Butler amassed 177 wins in women's basketball, two Independent Collegiate Athletic Association (ICAA) national championships, ECC Coach of the Year, ECC regular-season champions, two ICAA Coach of the Year awards and four NCAA Tournament appearances.

"This is a tremendous honor to be selected into my second hall of fame," said Butler.  "To go into my high school hall of fame is pretty special because Archbishop Carroll gave me an opportunity to get an education and play basketball at a high level. It also laid the foundation of the man I've become today and I can't thank them enough."
