Butler Named NABC Atlantic Region Co-Coach of the Year

RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Union University Head Men's Basketball Coach Jay Butler has been named the Atlantic Region Co-Coach of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), the organization announced on Monday, March 23.

Butler shares the honor with Easton Bazzoli, head coach at Gannon University.

Butler, who was also named the CIAA Men's Basketball Coach of the Year, led the Virginia Union University men's basketball team to a 25-6 overall record during the 2025-26 season. Under his leadership, the Panthers earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Tournament, continuing the program's strong presence on the national stage.

"I'm honored to receive this recognition, but it's a reflection of the people around me," said Butler.  "This honor belongs to my players, my coaching staff, and our Virginia Union community. I'm proud of what we've built and excited for what's next in our program."

The NABC Atlantic Region Coach of the Year recognition places Butler among the top coaches in Division II basketball this season. With the honor, Butler is now eligible for the NABC National Men's Basketball Coach of the Year Award, which will be announced on Wednesday, March 25.

Virginia Union concluded the 2025-26 campaign with one of the top records in the region and another postseason appearance under Butler's guidance.
