Jay Butler and
Robert Osborne have been selected to participate in the HBCU All-Star Game, to be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 2, at HP&E Arena at Texas Southern University in Houston, Tex.
Butler, the head men's basketball coach at VUU, will be an assistant coach on Team Willis Reed. Butler was named the CIAA Men's Basketball Coach of the Year after Virginia Union grabbed the Northern Division crown for the second straight year and led the Panthers to a 9-1 division record, a 12-4 conference mark, and a 22-6 overall record. Butler and the Panthers are the top seed entering the CIAA Tournament after finishing the regular season having won 11 of the last 13 games.
Osborne, a senior from Richmond, Va. helped lead the Panthers to the CIAA Northern Division crown and their first win in the NCAA Tournament in 17 years. He led the CIAA in scoring (20.2) and field goal percentage (.515) and was second in the CIAA in rebounding (8.8). His 15 double doubles led the CIAA and were tied for sixth in Division II. Â
Osborne was also named to the NCAA All-Atlantic Region Team and was the CIAA Player of the Year while averaging 20.7 points per game to lead the CIAA, and his 8.8 rebounds per game ranked second. Â He guided Virginia Union to a Northern Division title (second consecutive) and the top seed in the CIAA tournament. Â Osborne shot 54 percent from the field, second among qualified players in the CIAA. The six-foot-five forward led the Panthers in assists per game (3.3; fourth in the conference) and steals per game (1.4). He scored at least 25 points in nine games this year and he has three of the six 30-point performances that came in CIAA play.
The HBCU All-Star Game will be televised nationally by CBS.
