The Virginia Union University Golf Team competed in the 2023 CIAA Southern Division Golf Tournament March 13th & 14, 2023. The Southern Division Tournament was contested at The Charlotte Country Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.  Charlotte Country Club was founded in 1910 and is located four miles east of uptown Charlotte, in the historic Plaza-Midwood neighborhood. The 18-hole Donald Ross golf course was restored by architect Ron Prichard.  The 6, 493 yard 18-hole layout was a very good test for all the golfers competing.  The inclement cold, wet and windy conditions made it even more challenging as indicated by the scores.  The CIAA Southern Division was scheduled as a 54-holes tournament and due to the weather and golf course conditions was shorten to a 36-hole competition.  

There were seven teams competing in the Southern Division Golf Tournament, including individuals competing from Paine College. VUU finished second and team scoring was led by 1st Year Grad Student Travon Willis who finished T-2nd  with a score of 144 (70/74), followed by  Hayden Garcia, 2nd Year Grad Student who finished 6th with a score of 149 (71/78),  followed by 2nd Year Grad Student Alkin Barkley, T5th with a score of 157 (73/84), followed by 2nd Year Grad Student Ahmad Reedus and Senior Zaccheus Spann both finished T18th with a score of 159 (79/80).  Travon Willis made the Tournament "All-Tournament Team".

"This was our second CIAA tournament competition, while we got off to a good start on the first day, the weather was the winner the second day.  They still fought hard to the end, " said VUU Head Golf Coach E. Lee Coble.  "With the help of Assistant Coach Sean Bowers, the team continues to respond. We are immensely proud of the way the guys persevered to the end. I continue to be immensely proud of the accomplishments of our VUU Golf Team on and off the golf course".
