The Virginia Union University Golf Team competed in the 2023 Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) Rams Shootout Golf Tournament on March 6th & 7th, 2023. The Shootout was contested at The Southern Pines Golf Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina.  Southern Pines opened for play in 1906, Southern Pines Golf Course is one of Donald Ross's earliest original course designs. Winding around a series of knolls and ridges, the course offers some of the most dramatic golf terrain in the Sandhills, making it difficult to tell where nature's design ends and Ross's begins. At 6,500 yards, this extraordinary course challenges every level of play.

There were nine teams competing in the Winston-Salem State University Rams Shootout. VUU finished third and team scoring was led by 1st Year Grad Student Travon Willis who finished 4th with a score of 224 (75/78/71), followed by  Alkin Barkley, 2nd Year Grad Student, T5th with a score of 228 (78/79/71), followed by 2nd Year Grad Student Ahmad Reedus, T10th with a score of 231 (75/78/78), followed by 2nd Year Grad Student Hayden Garcia T11th with a score of 232 (77/78/77) followed by Senior Zaccheus Spann 23rd  with a score of 241 (78/76/87). Travon Willis and Alkin Barkley made the Tournament "All-Tournament Team".

"This was our first CIAA tournament competition, while we did not get off to a good start the team persevered and had a good final round finish, " said VUU Head Golf Coach E. Lee Coble.  "With the help of Assistant Coach Sean Bowers, the team continues to respond. We are immensely proud of the way the guys persevered to the end. I continue to be immensely proud of the accomplishments of our VUU Golf Team on and off the golf course".
