Virginia Union University, one of the nation's oldest Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), hosted the 68th Virginia State Golf Association (VSGA) Intercollegiate Championship Oct. 16-17 at Stonehenge Golf & Country Club in Richmond.
Stonehenge Golf & Country Club is a Par 71 6,725 yards tight tree lined fairways with large green complexes.
There were a total of 19 teams which consisted of DII and DIII teams (2 DII & 17 DIII) from colleges and universities throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. This year's championship was the largest field in the 68th year history of the VSGA Intercollegiate Championship.
Virginia Wesleyan University was the tournament champions with a team score of 592. Christopher Newport, which won last year's title, took third overall with a two-day 597, five shots behind Virginia Wesleyan. Washington & Lee placed fourth with a two-day 599, one shot better than Bridgewater College, which finished at 600. Lynchburg College (605), Ferrum (608), host Virginia Union (609), Emory & Henry (610) and Randolph-Macon (610) rounded out the top 10.
Tournament format play consisted of five golfers for each team and count the four lowest scores. VUU Team scoring was led by
Allan Day with 146 (75/71),
Robel Woldagabriel with 151 (75/76),
Paul Meints with 153 (77/76) and
Sergio Escalante with 159 (77/82). In a field of 101 players, VUU's
Allan Day finished eighth. Allan was also one of the Top 10 Tournament Medalists.
