Last-Second Heroics Lift Panthers 83-82

Box Score Virginia Union University's Ray Anderson hit a three-pointer with 3.4 seconds left to tie the game, then William Jenkins sank a free throw with 1.8 seconds to give the Panthers a dramatic 83-82 win over Winston-Salem State University on Monday, January 2, in Historic Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.

Anderson's trey tied the game at 82-82.  After a turnover on the in-bounds pass, Jenkins snuck in under the basket and drew a foul to send him to the free-throw line.

"I had just made a big turnover which made us down," said Jenkins.  "I was thinking 'I've got to hit at least one, just one."

Jenkins sank the first of two free throws to seal the win.

"This win starts out 2017 for us, but it's just one win for us" said Jenkins.  "We want to win the season and then make it to the CIAA Tournament.  It's one step closer to our goal."

"This was a tough one, but the team kept fighting," said VUU Head Coach Jay Butler.  "We ended up getting stops when we needed to and we knocked down shots."

Anderson finished with a game-high 20 points while teammate Tavon Mealy added 17 points.  Mealy and John Mitchell led the Panthers with seven rebounds apiece.

"Ray Anderson is our go-to guy down the stretch," Butler said.  "You've got to run plays for him and he knocked down a big three tonight."

VUU's Kory Cooley scored 14 points in the win.

The win raised VUU's record to 9-4 overall and 1-0 in the CIAA.  Winston-Salem State fell to 5-7 overall and 1-2 in CIAA play.

Virginia Union now travels to Raleigh, N.C., to face Shaw University at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 5.
