Panthers Fall in 2014 Freedom Classic 59-53

Box Score Virginia Union University's Avery Jirmnson scored 20 points, but Virginia State University defeated VUU 59-53 in the 2014 Freedom Classic on Sunday, January 19, in the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Va.

Despite a strong showing by the Panthers, their relentless hustle did not pay off. The team struggled from the field as they were unable to obtain a streak hot enough to carry the team to the winners circle.

The bright spot for the Panthers was senior center Omar Briggs. Twice in the last three games Briggs was the only Panther to record a double-double. The towering Briggs snatched 11 rebounds, and recorded 17 points.

"I thought we did a good job defending, but we didn't do a  good job rebounding, plus 22 on the glass for Virginia State, and we're both shooting bad.  We need every possession, (in addition to that), we didn't shoot well from the foul line."

The loss drops the Panthers to a disappointing 4-13 overall. However, with a 3-5 conference record, the Panthers are just 2 games removed from .500, and with the next 8 games all being divisional match-ups, the Panthers have plenty of opportunity to turn the tide going into the Tournament.

The Panthers are home against the Bulldogs of Bowie State on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 as part of a double header.  The VUU women's team tip off at 5:30 p.m. with the men beginning play at 7:30 p.m.
