Jirmnson, Salako Lead VUU to 75-71 Win

Box Score Coming off of a tough loss Saturday night the Panthers entered Monday night's game with something to prove against the Falcons of St. Augustine's University, The Panthers were electric as they jumped out to an early 10 point lead with just under 6 minutes to go until half time.

With the absence of Ray Anderson from the line up, the Panthers seem to formed a three-headed monster at the guard position.

Leading the bunch was junior Avery Jirmnson, accompanied by sophomores Ken Pankey and Michael Wynn.

Of the 3, Jirmnson had the hot hand with a total of 17 points on the night, going 9-14 from the free throw line. The speedster Pankey added 12 total points going 5-for-5 from the line. Bringing up the rear was Wynn whose precise passes led to five assist, in addition to two rebounds.

Leading the team in points at the half way mark, Akanni Salako finished his night with 17 points, helping the Panthers take momentum going into the half.

The Panthers also got much needed help inside the paint as the towering trio comprised of senior Justin Ihkide, sophomore Te'Quan Alers, and senior Omar Briggs.

Briggs had an all-star performance, registering the team's only double-double, putting up 14 points and bringing down 13 rebounds.

Ihkide followed up by adding six points and seven rebounds, while Alers assembled four rebounds, five points and a block.

When asked about tonight's performance head coach Luqman Jaaber said "it's always great to add another W to the column. We're looking for a stretch (of winning games). I try to tell the guys not to relax, stay focused, pay attention to the task, continue to watch the details, and those are the things that are going to win us any game."

With Monday night's win the Panthers improve to a 4-12 overall and 3-4 in the CIAA.. Saint Augustine's dropped to 10-5 overall and 3-2 in CIAA play.

Virginia Union now travels to the Richmond Coliseum to face Virginia State University in the 2014 Freedom Classic, to be held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 19.
