VUU Hall of Famer Hezekiah Braxton Dies at Age 79

Virginia Union University Hall of Famer Hezekiah Braxton, who played football for VUU from 1956-60, passed away on Friday, August 9, at age 79 in Baltimore, Md.

Braxton was a three-time All-CIAA Selection, and led the Panthers with 637 yards on 105 carries in 1959.  Braxton also scored 11 rushing touchdowns that season.

In 1960, Braxton scored seven rushing touchdowns.

After completing his collegiate career, Braxton signed to play professional football with the Baltimore Colts of the National Football League.  He later signed with the San Diego Chargers of the American Football League.

Hezekiah Braxton is survived by wife, Vivian; son, Hezy R. Braxton of VA; daughter, Shawn L. Braxton of MD; mother, Ethel Braxton Holley and a host of other family and friends.

Family will receive friends at the family owned WYLIE FUNERAL HOMES P.A. OF BALTIMORE COUNTY, 9200 Liberty Road on Friday (August 16) from 5 to 8 PM. Funeral Services will be held Saturday (August 17) at Heritage United Church of Christ, 3106 Liberty Heights Ave., 10 AM wake 10:30 AM funeral. Internment Monday, August 19 at 10:45 AM at Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the University of MD Medical Systems Foundation Inc. and designated for the Greenebaum Cancer Center, 110 S. Paca St. Baltimore MD, 21201, in memory of Hezekiah Braxton.
