Calvin Brown hit a jumper with :02 left in overtime to lift VUU to an 85-83 win over Bowie State University on Wednesday, January 23, in Bowie, Md.
VUU trailed by 14 at halftime, but fought back behind
Cordero Holt's 21 points. VUU tied the game and then went ahead when
Wesley Simmons hit a pair of free throws with 1:06 left in regulation.
VUU led by as many as three points, but Bowie State's Byron Westmoreland nailed a three-pointer with six seconds left in regulation.
In the overtime, VUU's
Marcel Crump scored two quick baskets to give Virginia Union a four-point lead, and the Panthers led by as many as six before Bowie State tied the game with 22 seconds left in the overtime.
Brown then hit his jumper to give VUU an 85-83 lead, and then sealed the game when he stole the inbounds pass.
Simmons and Crump scored 15 points apiece for the Panthers while teammate
Juan Wilson added 13 points. Wilson also had nine rebounds to lead VUU on the boards.
Bowie State was led by Westmoreland's 22 points while he and Najee White had nine rebounds apiece.
The win raised VUU's record to 4-11 overall and 2-6 in CIAA play. The Panthers are now 1-1 in the CIAA Northern Division.
Bowie State fell to 7-10 overall and 4-5 in the CIAA. The Bulldogs are 0-2 in the CIAA Northern Division.
Virginia Union now returns home to face Lincoln University on Saturday, January 26, at 7:30 p.m. in Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
