Bruce Spraggins Named to CIAA Hall of Fame

Warren "Bruce" Spraggins, who led Virginia Union University's men's basketball team to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1961, will be inducted into the CIAA Hall of Fame during the CIAA Tournament in Charlotte, N.C., the CIAA announced on Wednesday, January 25.

Spraggins, who was twice named to the All-CIAA Team, led the Panthers in scoring in 1959-60 and again in 1960-61.  He held the CIAA scoring title from 1959-61 and led the NCAA Small College listing as the top scorer. Spraggins also scored 54 against Saint Paul's College during the 1959-60 season.

Spraggins scored 1,507 points during his three-year career with the Panthers.  He once recorded 17 field goals in a single game for VUU (vs. Elizabeth City State on February 20, 1961).

During his career at Virginia Union, Spraggins averaged 24.3 points per game.

Spraggins  was drafted by the Philadelphia Warriors in the fifth round of the NBA Draft and also played for the New Jersey Americans of the American Basketball Association during the 1967-68 season.

Spraggins was inducted into the VUU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008 and is the Co-Owner of Appletown Sporting Goods in Harlem, N.Y.

Spraggins will be inducted along with Donald Evans (Winston-Salem State - Football), Dr. Claudie J. Mackey (Elizabeth City State - Baseball, Track), Ralph Talley (Norfolk State - Basketball), Dierdra Fields (Bowie State - Basketball, Volleyball), the 1950 North Carolina Central Men's Basketball Team and the late Vic Fulp, who was a sports writer for the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

The induction ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 2, in Charlotte, N.C.
