NCAA Recognizes Anthony Leonard's 100-Yard Punt Return

The NCAA will now recognize Virginia Union University's Anthony Leonard's 100-yard punt return against Virginia State University in 1973 as the NCAA Division II record along with Fayetteville State's Randy Ladson's 100-yard punt return in 1987.

The NCAA started keeping punt return records in 1970, and even though Leonard's return was actually 103 yards, the NCAA limits returns to 100 yards.

Leonard took a Virginia State punt three yards deep in his own end zone on October 27, 1973, and returned it all the way for the Panthers' first score in VUU's 39-0 win over the Trojans in front of 23,000 fans at Rogers Field in Ettrick, Va.

The record went unnoticed by the NCAA until Jim Junot, Sports Information Director of Virginia Union, notified Sean Straziscar of the NCAA of the oversight on January 6, 2011.  The punt return record will appear alongside of Ladson's return in all future copies of the NCAA Division II Record Book.

"This is a record that may be tied in the future, but it can never be broken," said Junot.
