1992 National Champions, Six Others to be Honored at Basketball Homecoming

The 1991-92 Virginia Union University men's basketball team, which captured the second of the program's three national titles, will be honored at the 2011 Basketball Homecoming on February 23 in Barco-Stevens Hall.

Also being honored on that night will be former VUU stars Don "Cisco" Ross, Bruce Spraggins, Larry Holmes, Walter Hurd, Derrick Johnson and Warren Peebles.

The six individual honorees will have their jersey numbers hung in the rafters of Barco-Stevens Hall along with such basketball luminaries as Ben Wallace, Charles Oakley and Barvenia Wooten-Collier.

There will be pre-game reception for the honorees and their families to be held at the Faculty Dining Hall in the Henderson Center on the VUU campus at 6 p.m. on February 23.

Don Ross

Don Ross '49
Don "Cisco" Ross is a member of both the VUU and CIAA Halls of Fame.  Ross led the CIAA in scoring for four years and was named the Most Valuable Player of the 1949 CIAA Tournament.
Bruce Spraggins

Bruce Spraggins '61
Bruce Spraggins was inducted into the VUU Hall of Fame in 2008.  While playing for the Panthers from 1957-61, he was twice named All-CIAA and led VUU in scoring in 1959-60 and 1960-61.  He led VUU to it's first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1961 and went on to play for the New York Nets of the American Basketball Association.

Larry Holmes '80
Larry Holmes was an integral part of the Virginia Union University's first NCAA Championship basketball team in 1980.  Holmes was named to the All-CIAA team for his performance during the 1979-80 season.

Walter Hurd '92
Walter Hurd was the team leader on the 1992 Virginia Union University NCAA Championship men's basketball team.  He earned All-CIAA honors in 1991 and collected 50 steals on the season in 1990-91. 
Derrick Johnson

Derrick Johnson '94
Derrick Johnson helped lead Virginia Union University to the 1992 National Championship in men's basketball.  He was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 1992 NCAA Division II National Tournament as well as being named to the 1992 NCAA All-Tournament Team.  Johnson earned All-American honors as well as All-CIAA honors in 1994.

Warren Peebles '94
Warren Peebles helped lead Virginia Union University to it's second national championship in men's basketball in 1992.  He earned All-CIAA honors in 1994 and signed as a free agent with the Denver Nuggets of the National Basketball Association.
