Virginia Union University's
Wayne Ford's steal and subsequent free throws with 23 seconds left to play lifted VUU to a 58-54 win over Saint Augustine's College on January 13 in Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
With the score tied 54-54 and Saint Augustine's with the ball, Ford cut off a pass from Saint's Aug's Jon Kindred and was fouled as he went to the basket. His two free throws gave the Panthers a 56-54 lead.
Two more free throws from
James Theus resulted in the final 58-54 score.
Theus led VUU with 14 points while
Juan Wilson scored 11 points. VUU's
Braxton Byerson added 10 points in the win.
Saint Augustine's was led by Nick Chamblee's 12 points.
The win raised VUU's record to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in CIAA play.
Saint Augustine's is now 3-8 overall and 2-1 in the CIAA.
Virginia Union now plays Virginia State University in the 2011 Freedom Classic, to be held on Sunday, January 16, in the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Va.
