On a warm summer day, Eager children flooded into historic Hovey Field for Virginia Union's 1st Annual Youth Football Camp. The t-shirts were handed out, and the youngsters stormed the field to line up for warm-up drills led by VUU football players. More than 100 young boys ages 7 to 15 experienced various stations, specializing in the fundamental skills of: passing, receiving, blocking and tackling.
Head Coach Michael Bailey along with his coaching staff administrated different drill stations and gave some tips and advice from a collegiate level. Many of the Panthers coaches and players commented on how impressed they were by the talent especially since the campers were so young. The boys not only learned the principles of the game, but they also learned how to handle themselves as positive young men off the field, the importance of education, communication and sportsmanship.
At the conclusion of the event, several awards were handed out for exemplifying the best skill, discipline and attitude for every position. Upon breaking camp, Head Football Coach Mike Bailey said, "This has been a lot of fun. I can't wait to start working to make the camp better next year!"
