Virginia Union University's Braxton Byerson led VUU with 20 points while teammate Gregory Redford added a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds to power the Panthers to a 67-60 win over Goldey-Beacom College on the first day of the Doubletree Hotel Richmond Downtown Capital Area Classic in Petersburg, Va., on December 29.

VUU's Wayne Ford added eight points in the win.

VUU now returns to Barco-Stevens Hall to face West Virginia Wesleyan College at 8 p.m. on December 30 on the second day of the Capital Area Classic.

West Virginia Wesleyan downed Virginia State University 77-55 in the nightcap of the first day.

Virginia State and Goldey-Beacom will play in the first game on December 30 at 6 p.m. in Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
