Alana Simmons recorded five kills on 14 attacks, but the University of Mount Olive defeated Virginia Union University 25-16, 25-15, 25-18 in the Lady Panthers' season opener on Tuesday, September 1, in Mount Olive, N.C.
Simmons also had seven digs and a block.

Mariana Soriano paced the Panthers at setter with eight assists while the Panthers recorded 18 digs as a team.
"Tonight, our girls went up against a strong, fundamentally sound team," said VUU Head Volleyball Coach Anetra Sims. "We played timid at times and tried to play it too safe, and unfortunately, that approach did not work in our favor. There are a lot of things we need to improve, and we will take the lessons from tonight's match and use them to grow. Losses are opportunities to learn, make adjustments, and become better. We will get back to work, trust the process, and continue to build together. We will learn from this, respond with purpose, and come back stronger."
Virginia Union will now travel to Albany, Ga., to compete in the Black College Excellence Classic. The Lady Panthers will meet Benedict College and host Albany State University on Friday, September 4, and will then take on Allen University and Savannah State University on Saturday, September 5.
