History was made for the Virginia Union University men's track & field program as sophomore hurdler Antonio Smith delivered a record-breaking performance at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Smith finished
third overall in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.79, breaking his
own school record and earning
First Team All-American honors. His podium finish marks a significant milestone for the Panthers and highlights one of the program's strongest indoor performances in recent years.
Fellow Panther sophomore
Carson Calhoun also turned in an impressive showing at the national meet, earning
Second Team All-American honors with his performance against the nation's top competitors.
Head coach Franck Charles praised the accomplishments of both athletes following the meet.
"I'm proud of both of these athletes," said Charles. "As true sophomores, they have worked incredibly hard to reach this level of competition. Finishing in third place at the NCAA Division II Championship is a significant accomplishment for our program.
This marks the end of our indoor season, and now we quickly shift our focus to the outdoor season, where we look to build on the success we had indoors and continue pushing for even greater results."
The Panthers now turn their attention to the
outdoor track & field season, looking to build on the momentum generated from their historic indoor campaign.
