The Virginia Union University men's and women's cross-country teams launched their 2025 campaign on Saturday, September 6, competing in the Lancer Open hosted by Longwood University in Farmville, Va.
The Panthers were highlighted by an outstanding performance fromÂ
Rodgers Korir, who claimed first place in the men's 8K race, setting the tone for the season with a dominant run.
On the women's side,Â
Natalie Young celebrated her birthday in style, clockingÂ
20 minutes, 23 seconds in the 5K to start her season on a high note.
Head Cross-Country CoachÂ
Franck Charles praised his student-athletes for embracing the early-season challenge.
"Our first cross country meet of the year tested both the men's and women's teams," Charles said. "Challenges like these are part of the journey, and they show us exactly where we need to improve. That's what the first meet is for—evaluating, learning, and building. I truly believe we have all the pieces to succeed. Now it's about regrouping, making the right adjustments, and moving forward together. I'm confident in this team, and I know we'll rise to the occasion as the season continues."
Virginia Union will return to action onÂ
Friday, September 12, when the Panthers compete at theÂ
CNU Invitational hosted by Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va.
