Volleyball Gains Split at Eastern Mennonite

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Virginia Union University's volleyball team earned a split on Saturday, September 27, at a tri-match held at Yoder Arena in Harrisonburg, Va. The Lady Panthers fell to Marymount University 3-0 before rallying to defeat Eastern Mennonite University 3-1.

In the opener, VUU dropped straight sets to Marymount (25-20, 25-18, 25-12). Madison Hill and Maria Pena paced the Panthers with six kills apiece, while Ashlee Franklin handed out 12 assists and collected 10 digs. Aireanna Johnson also chipped in 10 digs. Zinnia Pickett added two service aces, and Leilah Beasley recorded a team-high 11 digs.

The Panthers bounced back in the second match with a gritty 3-1 win over Eastern Mennonite (8-25, 25-13, 27-25, 26-24). Madison Hill led the charge with 11 kills, three service aces, and two blocks for a match-high 15.5 points. Maria Pena added seven kills and four aces, while Yasmeen Williams delivered five kills, four aces, and 10 total points. Setter Ashlee Franklin directed the offense with 17 assists and 14 digs, while Beasley anchored the defense with 14 digs. VUU totaled 13 service aces as a team.

"We were missing two key players tonight—both of whom are important offensive contributors," said VUU Head Volleyball Coach Anetra Sims.  "Their absence definitely impacted our rhythm, and I think it challenged the team's mental toughness and cohesion on the court. The girls were able to pull together during the second game and come out on top.  I have no doubt we'll regroup and come back stronger and continue to be more and more successful throughout this season."

With the split, Virginia Union moves to 5-5 on the season. The Lady Panthers will return to action on Monday, September 29, when they travel to Bluefield, W.V., to face Bluefield State University.
