BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – Virginia Union University's volleyball team came up just short in a five-set thriller against Bluefield State University, falling 25-18, 17-25, 25-20, 20-25, 15-10 on Monday, September 29, at Ned Shott Gymnasium.
The Lady Panthers fought hard to even the match at two sets apiece, but the Big Blue held off a late rally to claim the decisive fifth set.
Virginia Union was led by
Maria Peña, who recorded a match-high 14 kills to go along with 20 digs and three service aces.
Madison Hill added 11 kills and three blocks, while
Aireanna Johnson tallied 13 kills, 12 digs, and two aces. Setter
Ashlee Franklin guided the offense with 48 assists and chipped in 13 digs.
Defensively, the Panthers totaled 87 digs as a team, highlighted by contributions from
LeiLah Beasley (18 digs) and
Jasmine Powell (12 digs).

VUU will now travel to Fayetteville, N.C., to compete in the first CIAA Volleyball Roundup. The Lady Panthers will take on Livingstone College on Friday, October 3, and will then meet Shaw University and Fayetteville State University on Saturday, October 4.
