RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia Union University's volleyball team earned a historic victory on Thursday, September 25, defeating Elizabeth City State University 31-29, 25-21, 25-23 at Barco-Stevens Hall. The win marks VUU's first triumph over ECSU since October 10, 2019, snapping a 9-match skid.
The Panthers were led by
Alana Simmons, who powered the offense with 10 kills and four service aces.
Aireanna Johnson anchored the defense with four blocks and 14 digs, while teammate
Leilah Beasley also contributed 14 digs to the winning effort.
Ashlee Franklin orchestrated the attack, tallying 29 assists.
"I'm incredibly proud of our team as we continue to build a strong volleyball culture and usher in a new Era of Panther Volleyball," said VUU Head Volleyball Coach
Anetra Sims. "The girls fought hard for this win, and they earned it together — as a family."
With the win, Virginia Union improves its momentum heading into a doubleheader in Harrisonburg, Va., on Saturday, September 27. The Panthers will face Marymount University at 2:00 p.m., followed by a matchup against Eastern Mennonite University at 4:00 p.m.
